The VW Golf hatchback has been in production since 1974. It has been sold under a variety of body configurations and with several names including the VW Rabbit and the VW Caribe (Mexico). More than 25 million have been built as of 2007.
It was released as a front wheel drive replacement for the Beetle. Latter variations included the Golf GTI, a diesel powered version in 1976, the Jetta, the Cabriolet and the VW Caddy.
As of 2008 it is still in production in some markets including, South Africa, Brazil, China and Mexico and is currently sold as the VW Golf/Bora Mk4 variation. The US production ended in 2006. Blogs for enthusiasts still abound, blog toplist includes a directory of popular VW Golf blogs
