Back in 1962, Sam Walton opened up his first Walmart store in the town of Rogers, Arkansas. Few folks in America could anticipate the growth the company has seen since its inception nearly a half-century ago.
In 2008, there are over 4,000 domestic and 3,000 international Walmart stores, ranging from their original discount stores (which average over 100,000 square feet) to their supercenters (which average nearly 200,000 square feet). Walmart officially became international in 1991 when it opened its first Sam's Club in Mexico City. Sam's Club, another of Walmart's outlets is best described as a warehouse retail center selling products to both businesses and consumers in bulk quantities. Their biggest rival in size in the United States is Costco.
In 2008, Walmart officially took the "dash" out of its name in the United States.
