Webkinz are a line of stuffed toy animals produced by the Ganz Company. They include tags with registration codes which can be used to access the Webkinz website where players can register virtual versions of their Webkinz and play games to earn Webkinz dollars to purchase homes, furniture, toys and various other goods for their Webkinz. They can also go to school, learn skills and get jobs to earn money. Webkinz is well designed for pre-literate children with basic computer skills and is playable at a rudimentary level for ages 4 and up. Basic access is free, but a subscription area with additional options has recently been added to the site.
Several leading stuffed toy manufacturers have sought to imitate the Webkinz model, including Ty with their virtual Beanie Babies site and Russ with its Shining Stars line of toys.
