Born in Manhattan between 1949 and 1955 (depending on the source), Whoopi Goldberg is a multiple award-winning American comedienne, actress, producer, television host, and author. From the projects in New York City, to Off-Broadway, to San Francisco and back to Broadway, she became an entertainment icon.
The recipient of some of the most prestigious awards in film, television, and theater, Whoopi Goldberg came to prominence for her starring role in Steven Spielberg's film adaptation of Alice Walker's novel The Color Purple, and has since become one of a very elite group of artists who have won the Grammy, the Academy Award, the Golden Globe, the Emmy, and a Tony.
Goldberg is an integral part of the "Comic Relief" benefit concert series, which she helped to jump-start, directing the first and emceeing eight of the following comedy festivals to benefit the homeless. She is an avid humanitarian, advocating for children, the homeless, and human rights.
Whoopi Goldberg became a co-host on Barbara Walter's ABC-TV show The View in September of 2007, and will open a musical version of her hit movie comedy Sister Act in London’s West End in June of 2009.
