WWE (or World Wrestling Entertainment) is an entertainment company owned by Vincent Kennedy McMahon, who also plays a character on his shows, the evil promoter Mr. McMahon. WWE specializes in what they describe as "sports entertainment," but is more popularly known to the rest of the world as professional wrestling. Formerly known as the WWF (or World Wrestling Federation), the company was forced to change their name after a legal challenge by the "other" WWF, the World Wildlife Fund. Through the years, the company has also weathered scandal, particularly following the 2007 murder-suicide involving the family of WWE star Chris Benoit.
WWE produces popular entertainment programs for television including its flagship show, Monday Night Raw, which airs on cable television's USA Network, ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) which is seen on Tuesdays on the Sci-Fi channel, and Friday Night Smackdown which broadcasts on My Network TV. WWE also promotes several annual pay-per-view shows, including its biggest event of the year, Wrestlemania. Former WWE wrestlers include Hulk Hogan, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who all went on to become stars inside and outside of the squared circle. WWE's most popular current talent includes John Cena, HHH, The Undertaker, and Jeff Hardy.
