d say it, but as I glanced at the menacing headline: “Bears Eat Two Men“ and then spotted the words “Luke” and “Harding” below, I felt an, ahem, grizzly pang of conscience. The Guardian’s man in Moscow may have been a smug, plagearising hack, but still, being eaten by a bear is a bit harsh. Besides, didn’t he just re-write a ‘witty’ annual ‘expose’ of the craaazy Putin youth camp Nashi? But several signs immediately told me that Harding was in no immediate danger:

Man About Towns: Gone For The Long Haul
http://jetsethobo.wordpress.com/2008/07/24/gone-for-the-long...My host scoffed at the idea that there would be any New Zealanders in Vilnius. Directly after dinner we walked into a hospitable Irish pub run by a couple of Kiwi lads. I had a similar experience starting in an airport in Rio Gallegos, Patagonia. The NZ Vice Consul in Vladivostok has been written about as running the town like his own personal fiefdom. I don’t even know if that’s strictly accurate, but it certainly sounds interesting. I am sure there are copious other examples. New Zealand’s best export is our people they say. We are those few, those happy few who are better at representing

Foray into Tibetan history
http://mquestfrenzy.blogspot.com/2008/07/foray-into-tibetan-...Just finished reading an article on Tibetan military history by the ever-cynical though often insightful (in spite of his best intentions, apparently) Gary Brecher, who writes a column called The War Nerd for The Exile. Thought i'd pass it on in case anyone reading this is interested in the topic. Here's an

Ballad of the Flying Wing

War Nerd interview
http://infoproc.blogspot.com/2008/07/war-nerd-interview.htmlIf you're a fan of the War Nerd, check out this interview on Wisconsin Public Radio. On hypocrisy: "I don't live this double life, benefiting from the fact that my house is built on some other tribe's land and then pretending to regret that. I'll always remember having to study
