Blackberry Podcast App a Jab at Apple's Lack of Social Presence?
The Blackberry 6 operating system and the Blackberry Torch are set to be released on Thursday. As part of the hype, RIM is officially releasing a Podcast app that comes preloaded on the BlackBerry Torch. Other people will have to download it form the app store.
Key features of the new Podcast app include: browse and search for free podcasts from categories like arts, TV & movies, news and more; subscribe to, download and play podcasts directly from your BlackBerry smartphone; and, receive notifications when new episodes of your podcasts are available, and download them.
This move is a good one by RIM because it gives their company a social "in." Hopefully this is an attempt for RIM to leverage social channels to engage their loyal fan base and use various tools like podcasts to educate their customers.
One has to think that this podcast idea is a straight shot at Apple who has, as most can tell, has a zero social media strategy — at least in terms of engagement.
Other than a good customer service move, there's really no other explanation for RIM to be pumping out the podcast's like it's their job.
What do you think about RIM's podcast?
