British PM Wants To Ban Social Media

In a world that has a growing need to have a voice; internet has given us that voice. With social media, it has given the lonely virtual friends and the loudmouths a virtual soapbox to stand on. Are there people out there who can imagine a world without such a prominent element? The British Prime Minister is willing to bet that there is and whether they like it or not, the voices of an entire nation speaking out may soon be slightly muted.
British Prime Minister David Cameron believes that social media giants like Facebook and Twitter have contributed to the recent riots that have thrown London from a state of order to chaos.
The PM believes that the “free flow of information” can be detrimental at times such as these. Cameron’s government has called a meeting between those two social media sites as well as Research in Motion for a meeting to discuss what he believes their roles have been in the violence.
Cameron addressed Parliament in a statement saying that everyone who has been watching the violence can be motivated to organize more violence through the use of social media. Government officials will be looking at whether it is right to stop people from communicating via these websites and services when they know there are plots being made for additional acts of criminality.
Cameron, a Conservative, is surprisingly getting the support that he needs for a potential win on this proposal even from members of his opposition.
Ivan Lewis, the shadow secretary of culture in the House of Commons, has publicly noted the importance of free speech in the democracy but supports the argument to halt these modes of communication to support the safety and security of citizens.
