Can Anyone Beat Facebook?

After its humble beginnings, Facebook has become a powerhouse on the internet and has gone the distance even patenting the word “Face”. And now everything what they do is gladly accepted by the 500million + even thought the company plays with their users’ privacy. Sometimes even with poor security (my profile was hacked for the fifth time yesterday) and even with hundreds of malware 250 million + Facebook users including me ;) use Facebook everyday.

Facebook is a good medium for people to keep in touch with their friends, because these days are my holidays and FB helps me to keep in touch with my university friends, and when I’m at the university FB helps me to keep in touch with people close to my life. However, sometimes I tend to feel that Facebook is doing what ever they want because there is no competition for them.

Few years ago, MySpace was all rat rage but now it’s used by mostly musicians, Google buzz was a total waste and there is no sign of Google launching it’s so called “Google ME”.

Now the latest one to compete with Facebook is Diaspora, started by four NYC university students, and now it is giving out Alpha invitations for people (http://www.joindiaspora.com). The interesting fact with Diaspora is that it is open sourced, so it will (might) be a community driven project. When a article was published on Mashable saying about the invitations an interesting comment caught my eye, it says that how can four NYC university students compete with 500million + users and thousands of Facebook employees :o

However, there are thousands of people including me looking for a good competitor for Facebook and I’m looking forward in hope that Diaspora will be a hit. By being a community driven project, it might be able to dominate, as Wordpress is doing today. And let’s not forget that when MySpace was at its high, Mrak started Facebook. So why can’t Diaspora do the same. But personally I think name “Diaspora” needs to be changed.

So what’s the quality in Facebook that people keeps getting attracted even though the look and the way of the site stays the same? Is it because of the rapidly changing content? Even tough I use Facebook everyday but still I don’t an answer for this.
