A recent article in Investor's Business Daily (IBD) highlighted some ways in which savvy executives can help cultivate their workforce in a new era, with new tools, and new methods. Among the new tools, and trends in corporate development was the ability to constantly train employees, allow lateral and not just vertical movement. The trends in mobile computing and 'everywhere access' make it easier to train internal employees for not only advancement, but broaden their skill sets in other areas that complement their core roles. Social media will play a key role in this training according to the piece.

ProProfs CEO Sameer Bhatia, whose company created an online tool for testing and training said, "It used to be you were trained once a year. Now employees are constantly being trained." The restrictions of scheduling are virtually removed by using tools that are optimized for learning on mobile devices. "Scheduling alone is such a pain right now, employees want to be able to learn while they're coming into work, while they commute," Bhatia says.

With a competitive workforce, it's important as ever to keep up with innovations and cater to employee's whose value is not just in what's on their resume when they arrive, but what employers can add to an employees repertoire when they get there. It's a win-win situation in a global workforce to enable, arguably your most valuable asset, your employees to grow in directions other than up. Co-author of the book, Help Them Grow or Watch Them Go, Beverley Kaye, told IBD, "Employees can't get all the hierarchical moves they want. I think moving over is going to replace moving up." she argues.
