This week Jools Oliver, wife of the famous chef Jamie, admitted to regularly checking his emails and mobile phone to see if he was up to no good. Although some relationship experts warn that this behavior is unhealthy, with the rise of social media, it seems that a staggering 90% of us do the same.
A Third of Divorces are Due to Facebook
A recent study that involved many of the top divorce lawyers across the UK revealed that now over thirty per cent of divorces can be attributed to social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. These staggering statistics shed a new light on this growing mistrust in modern relationships, as many believe the stalking is simply self-preservation.
In the days of relationship experts such as Claire Rayner, the internet was never a threat and if a partner decided to pursue an affair they would have to invest a lot of energy into arranging face to face meetings over the conventional landline. Now, however, temptation is there every time we log onto a computer, from old flames that flicker on Facebook to strangers that offer sexual favors using a webcam.
Divorce Online claimed that last year alone over a third of divorce petitions mentioned Facebook as their reason for splitting. This news comes as Mark Zuckerburg changes his own Facebook status to Married.
However, once the petition is filed, the fault of Facebook doesn’t stop there, an advisor from Divorce Online warned that a status update can be used against you in a court of law. For example, if you are entering a custody battle for children and your partner deems you to be a heavy drinker and thus unsuitable, a simple status detailing your night out with friends in a bar could heavily influence a judge’s decision.

So is Jools right to keep tabs on her childhood sweetheart? Or does it spell disaster for the couple? As this pair seem to have one of the more conventional marriages in the limelight it seems strange that she doesn’t trust him online.
Although maybe Jools Oliver is just exerting a little prevention rather than being faced with finding a cure, using modern means to ensure her marriage stays intact despite the social networking temptation.
