Facebook and MySpace Announcement Predictions
A bombshell of sorts was dropped on the interwebs in the past 12 or so hours with Facebook and MySpace scheduling a joint announcement for today.
“Please join us for an invitation-only announcement by Mike Jones, CEO of MySpace, and Dan Rose, VP of Partnerships and Platform Marketing, Facebook,” Mashable posted via the invite.
The announcement is set to take place today, November 18, at 12:00 PM PT via webcast.
The word on the street, according to Mashable, is that MySpace will be using Facebook Connect in hope of building up their user base again. The two are playing nicely, as Mashable pointed out, because MySpace is solely focused on entertainment and isn't directly competing with Facebook, the social media giant, anymore.
Who knows if Mashable is right on this one, but for kicks, let's fantasize as to what the announcement will be:
- Facebook is buying MySpace for a few million bucks and finally, putting the nail into their former competitor
- MySpace will play nicely with the new Facebook Messages platform that the company rolled out this week
- Mark Zuckerberg is finally friends with Tom (as in in Anderson).
In all actuality, Mashable is probably right on this one and if the companies are really smart, there will be synergies between the two when it comes to Facebook Messages as well as other ways for users to have one-stop-social-media-content shopping, so to speak.
Facebook remains the hub for social content so it makes sense that MySpace integrates however it can. It'll be a matter of time before invitations are sent out for similar announcements.
My guess though, it'll be a while before we see Facebook and Twitter or Facebook and Google on the same docket.
What do think the announcement is all about?
