Fashion Backward: E-Tailer Needles Us with "Blog Writer Dress"
Cops wear uniforms. So do military personnel, professional athletes, nurses, maids and folks from assorted other professions.
But uniforms for bloggers? Male and female bloggers come in all shapes and sizes, and don all sorts of garb—from ripped-up T-shirts and cargo shorts to button-down shirts and spiffy suits. Uniformity tends not to be part of the blogosphere’s vernacular.
Now, though, one online retailer is recommending a uniform, of sorts, for women bloggers. It’s called the “Blog Writer Dress.”
“As a full-time blog writer, you know that there’s no reason to sacrifice ease in the name of style when you’re swanning around for hours with your laptop in tow. This loose-fitting babydoll dress makes a perfect match of both with its functional button front, cuffed short sleeves, and dark grey trim. A star-like pattern adds to its charm, as do its useful pockets.”
No blogger I’ve ever met has “swanned around.” Perhaps I’m not hanging out with the proper blogging crowd. Or maybe it’s just that I’m not sure if I’d know “swanning” if I saw it, unless it’s being done by an actual swan.
In my mind, the “Blog Writer Dress” doesn’t evoke images of swans. But let me make it clear that I’ve never slipped on a dress, so maybe I’m not the best judge of fashion for women bloggers.
Whatever the case, the swooning narrative from ModCloth.com makes the linen, cotton and polyester dress—and the life of a blogger—sound almost as romantic as a Roman goddess.
“Transition from typing at home to meeting up with your readers for cupcakes by adding a fitted blazer, gray tights and a high, sturdy pair of heels,” the description says, “and you’ll be feeling both comfortable and confident as you chat the night away.”Continued on the next page
