Google Recommits to Fastest Way to Search the Web
Today, the Google Directory is no longer available at Google. Google removed the old web page today, as seen in the photo below: The Google Directory looked like this photo in early July 2011:

Today, July 20, 2011, the same Google Directory looks like this:
The text of the above photo is the new message for visitors to the Google Directory:
“Google Directory is no longer available.
We believe that Web Search is the fastest way to find the information you need on the web.
If you prefer to browse a directory of the web, visit the Open Directory Project at dmoz.org“
Today, Google informally announced that directories, even the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory - ODP, is the slow way to search the web. ODP is also know as the Open Directory Project. The ODP is a partnership between AOL search and DMOZ, an abbreviation of directory.mozilla.org, the name of it's first domain.
Google's share of web search dropped to 67.55% from 67.95%, as reported by Experion Hitwise in July 2011's Search Engine Analysis. While it's fastest-growing competitor, Bing, owned by Microsoft, saw it's share of web search grow to 14.64% from 13.80%, according to Hitwise.
A faster day in searching the internet with Web Search has arrived, according to Google. Or perhaps, competition in Web Search is Bing-ing Google.
