“Innovation in Life” is the theme of the Dassault Systemes conference that I'll be attending next week, November 8-10, 2011 in Las Vegas.

Dassault Systemes is one of the largest Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) vendors, according to Gartner's Michael Burkett and Marc Halperin.

In particular, I'm looking forward to attending a roundtable with Bernard Charlès President and Chief Executive Officer of Dessault Systemes, and Monica Menghini EVP, Industry at DS.

I'll also be interviewing Cedric Simard about the Ice Dream project, which is a fascinating project that involves harvesting icebergs and transporting them over the ocean to areas that need water. The concept used Dassault Systemes 3D software to conduct a simulation of how a huge iceberg (7 million tons) could be moved using as small a tugboat as possible by utilizing natural ocean currents. After using CATIA software to create an exact model of the iceberg, the team used Dassault Systemes' Dymola for the complex simulation, factoring in issues like ocean temperatures that would affect melting en route as well as meteorological phenomena like wind. The team also used Dassault Systemes' SIMULIA software to consider risks such as fracturing of the iceberg. Running these simulations enabled the team to test the concept for a fraction of the cost of building a prototype, not to mention the ability to evaluate the possibility of environmental impacts should a risk like fracturing occur.

I'll be posting further news from the conference in upcoming articles here as well as featuring aspects of collaborative innovation at the Collaborative Innovation site.
