Elon Musk, pioneering founder and CEO of private spaceflight company SpaceX, has announced plans are in the works to fly someday as many as 80,000 citizens of Earth to our red neighbor, Mars. As long as they can afford roughly half a million for the one-way trip.

I’m raising my hand on this one, Elon - I think a blogger like myself could contribute to the colony’s overall success.

First off, I’m hardly one of the “one in 100,000” residents of our planet that could afford such a journey. So how could I even consider this endeavor? I’m looking at you, Boeing, General Electric, Amazon, and other mega-companies out there who have deep treasure chests for advertising. Although Boeing hasn’t disclosed how much it spends to get its brand name out there these days, a full decade ago it was roughly $50 million. Annually. Even Hostess might be looking to shed some cash to have me personally place the last Twinkie on the soil of our planetary friend.

Fiscal times may be tough, but I’m sure a cool half million is swing-able, especially given the continued exposure I’d give a company in return for the travel pass. Which brings me to how a blogger like me could contribute to the SpaceX colony’s long-term success...

I’d like to maintain the first in-situ Mars blog, mustering my writing skills both aloft on the journey through space, and on “Terra Rosa” itself. I’d provide non-snarky, weightless commentary on the exciting journey, photographing every mile on the way (while pinkie-swearing to stay away from Instagram) and sharing the travails of my fellow travelers, and providing a diasporic perspective on what’s going on back home as news arrives.
