OMG! ‘Gossip Girl’ Game Lends High-Society Aura to Facebook
This is more than mere gossip.
Warner Bros. has launched a Facebook game based on its Gossip Girls show on The CW Network. Gossip Girl: Social Climbing is Warner Bros.’ first foray into social gaming.
“We recognize Facebook is a very important, growing platform for games, and for our first step in the space we have made a fun game for the hugely popular franchise Gossip Girl,” said Martin Tremblay, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
“Working with Warner Bros. Television, we are creating new categories of social games with built-in appeal to their extensive fan base.”
The Gossip Girl game is available for free on Facebook. The game already has more than 19,000 monthly active users.
New episodes of Gossip Girl started Monday, Jan. 24.
“After four seasons, more than 80 episodes and close to 8 million Facebook fans, Gossip Girl remains a pop culture phenomenon,” said Lisa Gregorian, chief marketing officer at Warner Bros. Television.
Players of the Gossip Girl game can earn points by attending virtual fashion shows, sample sales, club openings, and events such as the Assassin Party and Sweetheart Ball. The game features Gossip Girl characters like Blair, Serena, Chuck and Nate.
Promoters of the game said players can accomplish “social agenda missions” such as attending parties with friends, flirting with a mysterious stranger or unleashing your “wild side.” However, if players go too far, they can be kicked out of an event.
The game was developed by Arkadium Inc.
The one-hour TV drama chronicles “the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite.” It’s based on a best-selling series of young-adult novels by Cecily von Ziegesar. The title of the show refers to a blogger known as Gossip Girl, who’s “determined to uncover and share every scandal possible on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.”
The show’s stars include Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley and Chace Crawford.
