If you’re trying to woo a client or business partner, flattery will get you pretty far, according to Randi Zuckerberg, former marketing director at social media giant Facebook.

In an interview with the Advertising Specialty Institute’s radio show, Zuckerberg said: “People are really suckers for flattery, and social media is a great way to get someone’s attention in that regard.”

To grab the attention of a potential customer or business partner, Zuckerberg suggested sharing articles about that person or company on Facebook or Twitter, or even writing a “flattering” opinion piece about the prospect. That way, you pop up on the radar of the potential customer or partner, she said.

Zuckerberg, sister of Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, stressed that social media should be a two-way street in connecting with business prospects. “Don’t just be broadcasting one way everything that you’re thinking and doing,” she said. “You want to really make sure to respond to people and have a conversation.”

Zuckerberg will deliver the keynote speech May 10 at a trade show in New York City hosted by the Advertising Specialty Institute. The title of the talk will be “Social Change Through Social Media: How the Web is Changing the Way We Live, Vote, Organize and Work.”

Zuckerberg announced in August that she was leaving Facebook to start her own business. In February or March, Zuckerberg is set to launch R to Z Media, which will help companies take advantage of social media. Zuckerberg said the company already has signed up a few pre-launch clients. Among those clients is Cirque du Soleil, according to Zuckerberg’s Facebook page.

“We’re really focusing on being a social production company, on creating content and working with brands to create content that truly leverages social (media) and the social viewing experience,” Zuckerberg said.

Zuckerberg said the future of social media is in mobile. “I think we’re just on the tip of the iceberg with mobile,” she said, “and I’m super excited to see where we go.”

The Advertising Specialty Institute is a media, marketing and education organization for the promotional products industry.
