Slow and Steady Guest Blogging Yields Rewards
Bloggers who are just starting out should try and get their name out through guest blogging. There is a ton of competition and without a name, you are just another face in the crowd.
Guest blogging adds credibility to one's blog or brand and over time makes one more attractive to potential advertisers. There are a lot of sites out there offering "get-rich-quick" schemes and "instant backlinks." When you understand how the internet works, you know these claims are false and impossible to fulfill.
You don't have to give up though, just because these things take time. Seeking out places to publish and guest blog online is the way to get on the train headed for success. I have a set of sites I have formed relationships with where I post at least monthly. This steadily increases the number of backlinks to my blog and gets my name out. Meanwhile, those sites receive the benefit of well-written articles that bring them traffic.
The rewards of gaining backlinks and authority via guest blogging are not instant. It does work though; I'm living proof. When I type my name or brand into a search engine, I see a variety of sites representing my authority as they link back to my blog. As an online publisher, the array of backlinks that show up in a search reflects your influence on the web. You can't create influence overnight, but being steady at guest blogging will yield a strong presence that anyone can verify just by pressing "search."
Where are good places to guest blog? I would recommend starting with the established websites that feature guest writers. Of course, Blogcritics.com and Technorati.com are good places to apply. They have fairly challenging criteria but you can reapply later if you don't get accepted right away. There are others like them you can find if you do a few simple searches. After the established companies, look for the blogs you enjoy reading. Passion is everything when it comes to guest blogging. I've been approached by people who love the topic(s) of my blogs and their guest blogs are a joy to read again and again.
