Smashwords and Lulu Lead the Way

Yeah, I know it sounds like I’m talking about the Rise of the Machines and the end of mankind, but I’m making a prediction here.

The Ebook is taking over.

In fact, I think it’s the end of printed books.

Oh no, not quite yet. There’s still a way to go, but it’s happening and it won’t take as long as you might think. There are Kindles and Ipads and Nooks and a host of other little electronic devices and you can buy and read books on them as you would a printed page. They’re a wonderful device. I mean, why carry one book when you can carry 1,000?

I truly think we’re living in an era similar to the time of videos and DVDs. You remember DVDs came in and everyone thought the two types of technology would live together quite happily for some time?

And they didn’t.

DVDs killed video tapes faster than a speeding bullet.

But this is good news for writers. This means that writers can self publish their own work on sites like Smashwords and Lulu. This is a major shift for anyone trying to make it as a writer. For the first time in centuries the pendulum is swinging back in our direction.

Let me point you towards one writer who is really pushing the new medium. His name is Joe Konrath. This guy has become somewhat of a hero to me. Joe is selling lots of ebooks and making money from it. He’s just one of a growing number of authors who are making it big with ebooks. He is really talking sense when he speaks about the industry and what it means for writers.

I highly recommend you look at Joe’s blog.

As writers, it’s vitally important we keep up with technology and the opportunities available for us out there. I’m in the process of putting together my first ebook (watch this space). It’s an easier process than you might imagine.

Do yourself a favor. Check out Joe’s site and then have a look at Smashwords, Lulu, Kindle Direct Publishing and others.

Don’t be video. Be DVD. OK? Keep Writing!

Who am I? My name is Darrell Pitt. I first had the dream of becoming a writer when I was twelve. I received some positive feedback on a story I wrote in class (damn that teacher – how much easier life would have been if I’d wanted to be a plumber!) …
