Social Media Birthdays
My birthday was this past Wednesday and I knew what I was in store for the night before. I'd say within the past two years, sites like Facebook have become a huge part of people's lives. They visit it regularly and they have replaced various functions in their day to day existence.
The most obvious is learning what people they know are doing. Updates. Photos. Games they're playing. Media they're experiencing. If they're engaged or married or single. Moods they're in. Who in their family is now on Facebook.
People are also using it for communications. E-mail. Instant Messaging. And, people use it to post notes on the other person's walls.
Quite possibly the biggest use is for birthday wishes as I just experienced. I received wishes from less than 20% of my friends and it still wiped out all productivity that day. Employers of the world must be happy I do not currently have a job. Because I wouldn’t have gotten anything done.
One other thing social media sites are doing is replacing calendars. Specifically as it pertains to someone's birthday. On Facebook, there is a little box that says who is having a birthday today. And, if you click in the box, it will tell you who is having one soon. Or had one. Or will have one next month. You don't even have to write things down anymore.
This is, of course, assuming that someone has actually posted their birthday. Or is telling the truth as a lot of people still don't put the correct year. Vanity, I suppose. I've heard complaints about how Facebook, as a form of technology, creates a wall between real human to human interaction. Or that the whole thing is just feeding our sense of individual egotism.
I suppose there is a danger of becoming a little too tuned in to the on-line world at the expense of the real world. However, I’m sure our ancestors said that about telephones replacing the … telegraph? And, really, given how bad the Postal Service is, does anyone really care about not getting a card in the mail?
So, if your birthday is soon, then friend me. You’ll get one more birthday wish on your wall.
