Threatening Tweets Draw Attention from Secret Service
Be careful what you write online, because it just might come back to haunt you. Twitter users @THHEE_JAY and @Solly_Forrell both twittered last night calling for the "ASSASSINATION!" of President Barack Obama following the passage of the health care reform bill in the House.
Today, ABC News reported that Forrell and @THHEE_JAY, whose real name is Jay Martin, were both under investigation by the Secret Service. I'm not really sure how they didn't see this one coming. Being such real American patriots and all, they must have known calling for the president's assassination in public is not something the Secret Service takes very lightly.
Free speech is important, and the internet is widely considered one of the last real bastions of free speech in the media, but that doesn't give people license to spout off whatever they want without consequence. I'm not sure exactly what Forrell and Martin expected to come of this, but hopefully they've learned a valuable lesson about keeping political discourse at a reasoned and respectable level.
