Weibo: Is China's Twitter Going to Come Here?
Twitter, without a doubt, is one of the biggest names in social media, probably next only to Facebook in terms of popularity and number of users.
There is a report, however, that another microblogging platform is making waves in the Eastern part of the world, one that could become a very potential threat and challenger to Twitter in the near future.
Enter Weibo, China's biggest and most popular microblogging social network! Sina Weibo itself has about 250 million users, and is currently gaining 10 million more each month. China has about 550 million Weibo accounts distributed across various microblogging services.
The Chinese government is known to strictly censor the incoming and outgoing online activities of its own citizens; however, this does not deter Chinese Weibo users from reaching out and expressing themselves on the platform.
Even with Weibo services' rapid Chinese expansion, the service is branching out to other languages.
Is Weibo the biggest thing happening in China and to the Chinese people right now? Will it ultimately bypass the great firewall of that country at last, breaking the censorship barrier and allowing its citizenry open communication with the rest of the world?
Those are some very interesting and exciting thoughts to ponder. Twitter, watch out!
