What if Facebook Just Disappeared?
What would we all do in our spare time without Facebook? A sign of the times wherever you go, it has become normal to see people checking their Facebook whenever they have a spare moment. From the early days of Facebook when such frequent checking was to see how many friends we were accumulating and how many ‘Likes’ we received to an exceptionally witty status update, to now, when increased accessibility from virtually every device around means we can fill in those spare moments in the coffee shop queue or at the bus stop, by checking what our Facebook friends are up to.
Huffington Post recently posed the rather ominous question; What if Facebook disappeared tomorrow? Indeed what would happen? Jean-Francois Blanchette points out that the only format to archive Facebook, is Facebook. Many people would admit to being slightly addicted to the monitoring of their Facebook accounts. For the people who are heavy users and update daily, interact with many people and upload lots of photos, what would happen if their Facebook life disappeared?
When it comes down to it, we exist and invest in this virtual social medium that could feasibly disappear. Not only would the photos and content that was exclusively uploaded to Facebook be gone forever, but the relationships forged within Facebook would be too. You might have fabulous chats every week with a person from the other side of the globe over a game of ‘Words with Friends’ and liken your relationship with them to a real friendship. Your love of the game has taken your interaction to a level of deeper conversation and sharing, with the internet serving to remove the geographical boundaries that exist between your locations. Without Facebook would you always wonder what had happened to Betsy from Yonkers? Would you miss your friend, or would you cut your losses and make new friends within another social media platform?Continued on the next page
