Most folks just open their WordPress blogs and see only a few things on their dashboard — stats on their how many posts they've written, how many new comments there are to approve, Google Analytics reports on the Web traffic they're getting, or perhaps even MobStac reports on their mobile visitors. But only true blog nuts like me notice when WordPress has done something new.

For example, on June 14, in the WordPress development blog (which shows up on the right side of your dashboard when you take the software out of the box) announced that they now have a "release candidate" version of WordPress 3.2 that's ready for download.

This is good. Every time this amazing blogging platform updates, there are good reasons for it. Sometimes it's for better security and at other times it's to improve or repair usability. I don't know how you feel, but to me, WordPress just keeps getting better and I love to know about any new improvements as they're released.

The WordPress folks also reported that more than 350 support tickets were received for the current version and that this new release candidate will address many of these issues. They're not telling us which ones they are, dang it, but the release candidate is available now for anyone who wants to download and test it out.

So, what the heck is a release candidate? Should you install it or wait?

My advice, unless you're "extra adventurous" or a total WordPress propeller-head-type tech savvy person, is to wait for a stable version, or at least until a new beta version arrives.

Think of the release version as a "clinical trial." It's available, but not meant for the general public.

In the release candidate version, the WordPress folks are looking for people who will actually try to break things on purpose, and they should probably be people who know what to do when something does go SNAFU. In other words... developers. The release candidate version is not for the novice or the faint of heart.
