Crank It Up to 96 and Just Move On
Even though the NCAA basketball season has officially been over for about a week and a half, I can't believe it has taken this long for an announcement that they are going to indeed bump the tournament up from 65 to 96 teams.
Seriously, what's the hold up? We all know it's going to happen whether we like it or not. So, why wait and just say "yes, we're going to 96 teams, we're just looking for more television money"? Isn't that really what's going on? Of course.
It's not that I hate the idea of going to 96 teams. It really only adds one more round and most of the top-tier teams would be getting byes anyway. But the thing that I don't like is the talk of the first round games being broadcast either on TBS or its family of networks, like TNT< or even TruTV.
Is that really what we want? The beauty of it now is everyone can watch the tournament, whether they have cable or not. I know in this day and age, it's nearly impossible to find anyone who doesn't have cable. But, they are out there. There actually are people who don't have cable and will get cut off from the first round "magic."
Back to the point...let's just get it over with. The sooner we go to 96 teams, the sooner we can all get our whining out of the way, accept it, and move forward. This is going to happen, so let's do it already.
