Enjoy A Weekend's Run Without A Marathon
You could just cheer for the elites on TV and your fast friends up at the Boston Marathon this weekend, or you could head to the site of the world’s oldest marathon to be a bigger part of the fun.
Hop on a cheap flight to Boston and see all the tourist sites while you get to know the city as a runner – running tours are everywhere these days. They might even take you up Heartbreak Hill. For a cheaper view of the city, join a weekend long trip with a local running club. They won’t give you a history lesson, but they’ll get you a good workout.
To get some good deals on running gear while you’re in town, check out the Boston Marathon Expo. It may be filled with advertisements, but it’s also filled with giveaways, bargains and a few raffles. You’ll also want to pick up a spectator guide while you’re there. The online version will have you more lost than all the one-way streets closed for Marathon Monday.
After the race – and maybe before, too – you’ll want to hydrate. The Boston Hash House Harriers always host a water stop on the marathon course at mile 20, except that they also serve beer to the adventurous.
Next year, with some more hill training, maybe you won’t feel the pain.
