Golf Season Comes To An Abrupt End In The Northeast
The official golf season the northeast is from April 1st to October 31st. This is when all tournaments are held and we can post scores. With October 31st coming on a Monday, this was supposed to be our final weekend of the season. Sadly, Mother Nature had different plans.

On Saturday, October 29th, the New York Metropolitan area was hit with a record-breaking storm. Central Park, in New York City, recorded 3 inches but those of us north and west of The City were not as lucky. As I sit through day two without power, I have to remind myself it could have been worse. In New Milford, New Jersey, they recorded 19 inches. We were “lucky” in only receiving 8 inches of snow and no power for two days but this meant we wouldn’t get an official round in on our home courses again.
End of Golf In 2011?
A few golfers were crazy enough to venture out on their home course to sneak in the final round (see above) but for most of us, golf season came to an abrupt end. The snow totals were enough to not only cancel Saturday rounds, but Sunday and likely Monday rounds too.
As November arrives with snow already on the ground it makes me wonder how much golf is left for us in the Northeast in 2011. If the cold weather and snow stick around, it's likely courses will close early to protect their courses and especially the greens. Usually I keep my clubs in my car until the first snowfall just in case we have one of those great golf days late in the fall. I've played all the way into December in Connecticut and one of my most memorable rounds was on Thanksgiving with snowflakes coming down as I teed off on nine.
This year I'll keep the clubs in my trunk despite the first snowfall already occurring. As temperatures reach into the mind 50's this week, the snow will melt and courses will likely remain open for a little longer. While the snow is a reminder that our 2011 golf season is coming to an end, I have faith in golfers being crazy and I expect to see us out on courses for several weeks to come.
