Kolkata Welcomes the IPL-5 Champion Knight Riders
Kolkata; Tuesday, May 29, 2012 - Today the entire city of Kolkata was painted in purple as they welcomed the winning team of the Indian Premier league 2012. The atmosphere was just like if the team had won the World Cup.
A grand victory parade was held by the state-government of West Bengal. The parade began from Hajra crossing which proceeded to Writer's building which is the government headquarters of West Bengal, and from here the parade was to end at Eden garden Stadium which is refereed to as the Mecca of Indian Cricket. The stadium was filled with more than 85,000 fans waiting for their champions to return. About 25,000 fans were waiting outside the stadium. The music and cultural shows were held here in the stadium.
The team members were seated in an open bus. The bus drove about 8KM from Hajra Crossing to reach Eden Garden's. After a small felicitation program at the Writer's building Chief Minister where she was joined with the King of Bollywood and the team owner of Kolkata Knight Rider's Shahrukh Khan and team co-owner and Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla. Together everyone then proceeded for the Eden Gardens.
At the stadium the team members were handed bouquets by the Chief Minister. Then they were given Gold Medal's with Gold chain. The player's also cut a grand cake to celebrate the victory.
At the end team captain Gautam Gambhir thanked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her support. Also team owner Shahrukh Khan said that he had been waiting for this day so long and thanked Kolkata fans for their welcome and support.
Earlier the team won the first ever Indian Premier league championship on this Sunday defeating the two time champions Chennai super Kings by 5 wickets. This is Knight Riders first ever IPL win.
