LeBron James Ignites Twitter With "Dunk Contest?" Tweet
LeBron James dropped a vague tweet last night with the simple message "Dunk Contest?"
Since that time, the message has exploded across the twitterverse, with over 19k retweets and more than 12k favorites. Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith already made a video response on ESPN's First Take. With this manic response, will King James join the dunk contest this year?
For 10 years, LeBron has hinted at the prospect of joining the dunk contest but he has never followed through. It seems like it would be in bad taste for him to drop such an obvious hint, and then not back it up with his actions. He already turns the All-Star Game into a dunking clinic as it is, why not extend his talents to another part of this fun NBA weekend?
To be sure, the contest will be stellar with or without him. According to Justin Onslow of Bleacher Report, some participants for the fan favorite contest have already been decided. The group consists of the following players:
- Jeremy Evans of the Utah Jazz (last year's winner)
- Eric Bledsoe of the Los Angeles Clippers
- Kenneth Faried of the Denver Nuggets
- Gerald Green of the Indiana Pacers
- Terrence Ross of the Toronto Raptors
- James White of the New York Knicks
Jeremy Evans and Gerald Green have both won the contest before. Gerald Green won it in 2007 as a member of the Celtics, and Jeremy Evans won it last year as a member of the Utah Jazz, his current team. Don't be surprised if we see these two at the head of the pack this year.
Right now, tickets to the contest, which takes place on February 16th, start at just under $500. If LeBron confirms his participation, don't be surprised if prices skyrocket.
