Maria Sharapova Wins Her First French Open Title, and a Career Grand Slam!
Russiaan tennis star, Maria Sharapova, has won the 2012French Open 2012 women's single's championship. Sharapova defeated Italy's Sara Errani with straight-sets to win the finals by 6-3, 6-2.
Sharapova has won all four Grand-Slams, making her the 10th women world-wide, and Russia's first women, to have completed this achievement. Also as a result of reaching the final, Sharapova will return to the number 1 spot in the WTA(Women's Tennis Association) rankings for the first time since 2008.
It took 1 hour and 30 minutes for Sharapova to win over Sarah Erani. It was Erani's first ever Grand-Slam tournament final. After winning Maria said, "It has been such a long journey for me to get to this stage. Eight years ago it was my first breakthrough Grand-Slam and after eight years I am here." She also said that, "It doesn't matter how many Grand-Slams you win, If it was my only one it would be just as special as it would be winning my fourth grand-slam."
Maria completed her Career Grand-Slams by winning singles titles at the 2004 Wimbledon, 2006 US Open, 2008 Australian Open and now the 2012 French Open! This was her 27th WTA singles title. Maria Sharapova made her professional breakthrough back in 2004 at the age 17 when she defeated two-time defending champion Serena Williams in the 2004 Wimbledon final for her first Grand Slam singles title.
The French Open women's singles final once again failed to meet expectations as for the 11th consecutive year the final finished in straight sets. The last three set final played at Roland Garros was in 2004 when Jennifer Capriati defeated Kim Clijsters in a exciting match by 1-6, 6-4, 12-10.
