NCAA Final Four: Is This What We Really Want?
Over the years, the Final Four that has thrilled a lot of people. Mid major teams such as Virginia Commonwealth University and Butler as well as more established teams such as UConn and Kentucky have brought us some thrills. However, one has to ask, are these the best teams in the country? Maybe not, but they are your 2011 Final Four teams.
I personally don't think so, but I could be said that these teams have been the best teams over the last two weeks.
VCU has played over its head in the tournament. They are shooting from behind the 3-point line than they have all season and are playing better defense. Good for them. Enjoy the run.
But, it’s really going to be interesting if this Final Four is really what the country wants to see.
Oh, will the powers that be say the right things? Of how good it is for Butler to repeat their Final Four appearance and VCU being there? Sure they will. But will it translate into ratings? I know the Final Four will have good ratings, but will they be down from other Final Fours? For pete's sake, you have VCU playing Butler in the one game. This is a matchup you will see on Bracket Buster weekend, not the Final Four.
We will see how hypocritical the American people are. They say they want the small guys to win, but we will see if they tune in to watch it.
You know if instead of VCU and Butler, you had Kansas and Florida, a clash of the titan, the ratings would be through the roof.
I'd guess that the college presidents of the big-name conferences are not happy, at least, behind closed doors. You have some smaller conferences cashing some big paychecks this month. That was supposed to be their pay days, not the Missouri Valley Conference’s.
It will be interesting to see if and how the NCAA can "fix" this to make sure it does not happen again. Or, just maybe, they do want it to happen again. What do you think?
