Olympic Luger Nodar Kumaritashvili Dies After Crash
The opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics are today, but the festivities will become a somber affair as luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died today after a crash today during training.
Kumaritashvili, a Georgian, reportedly went over the ledge of the track and hit a steel pole.
Kumaritashvili was estimated to be going over 93 miles per hour near the end of the course where he went off the track. The track is considered the world's fastest and several Olympians recently questioned its safety. More than a dozen athletes have crashed during Olympic training.
Kumaritashvili, 21, was taken to a Vancouver hospital but couldn't be revived. He finished 44th in this season's Luge World Cup.
