Shaq pays for Funeral of Shaniya Davis
Most are familiar with the extremely unsettling story of Shaniya Davis, a five-year-old who was found murdered after her mother allegedly sold her into sexual slavery. It was one of the most profoundly horrible stories in the news in a long time.
The story had a big impact on Cleveland Cavaliers star Shaquille O'Neal, as it did on any normal human being. But Shaq is also in a position to do more than feel sympathy, and as he has in the past, he stepped up, paying for the young girl's funeral.
"I was sitting at home watching it on the news and the story brought a tear to my eye," O'Neal said Wednesday. "Being a law enforcement guy that investigates crimes against children, I wanted to be able to help in some way."
O'Neal, who wants to work in law enforcement after his NBA career is over, also paid for the funeral of former NBA legend and pioneer George Mikan, who played while the league was still struggling for survival and salaries were low.
