Social Media Fines in the NBA
As we make our way into the NBA playoffs, where hefty fines are in effect for players who decide to flop, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the recent history of NBA fines. A recent article on Crunchology explores some of the more interesting corners of the NBA fines landscape. One such corner happens to be Social Media related fines.
Of the $11,488,000 in NBA fines incurred since 2003, $797,500 has come from individuals making mistakes on Twitter, and surprisingly those individuals are not always players. Check out the most recent Twitter fines against individuals in the NBA.
1. Dec. 18, 2009 – Brandon Jennings Tweets Before Speaking to Media - $7,500
In 2009, after a double-overtime win, Brandon Jennings tweeted this message to the world. Seems harmless enough, right? Wrong. Despite being a totally innocent tweet, the NBA prohibits players from tweeting until they have finished speaking with the media after games. Jennings tweeted too early, which cost him $7,500.
2. June 8, 2011 – Gilbert Arenas Fails. Hard. - Unknown Fine
Gilbert Arena’s twitter account was precisely what parents fear when they consider how influential NBA stars are as role models. It was never clear precisely why Arenas was fined, or even how much, but judging by the excerpts below, it was simply for his twitter presence in general.
