Their 10-year contract was set to expire at the end of the 2013 season. Negotiations for the new deal had been ongoing for several months. Sprint officials indicated during the season finale at Homestead that a deal was imminent.

Hesse called the Chase for the 2011 Sprint Cup championship race between Champion Tony Stewart and runnerup Carl Edwards the best since its 2004 inception. He closed his presentation by thanking the drivers for adding excitement to "an amazing series."
