The 2011 British Open Preview & Groups To Watch - Page 2
The top ranked golfer in the world, Luke Donald, is having a remarkable year. He won the Accenture Match Play Championship earlier this year and just last weekend won the Scottish Open, the tournament some consider to be the best tune-up for The Open Championship. With wins on both the European Tour and PGA TOUR, it's easy to make the top ranked golfer in the world your pick to win this week. Donald isn't the only player in the field who has won on the PGA TOUR this season. Seventeen other players (including McIlroy & Schwartzel) have victories in 2011 including four players who have two wins. Steve Stricker, the top ranked American golfer, is one of those four players and is coming off a win on Sunday at the John Deere Classic. He has made the cut in all 12 starts this season and has 3 top 10's to go with his two victories.
Nick Watney is another player with two victories on the PGA TOUR this season. His most recent came nine days ago at the AT&T National. The win moved him into first place in the FedEx Cup standings, the PGA TOUR Money List and up to 10th in the Official World Golf Rankings. He has made 12 of 14 cuts with two wins and six top 10 finishes.
Three Groups to Watch at The 2011 Open Championship
3. Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia & Ryo Ishikawa: Luke Donald is the main reason I have interest in this group. He's the top ranked player in the world and coming off a win at the Scottish Open. This could be his time. I don't know if Sergio Garcia will ever win a major but he knows how to play in them. He has 16 top 10 finishes in majors. I'm curious to see how he does playing with Donald. Ishikawa hasn't done anything great but he's young. Playing with these two guys will give him great experience for the future.
