UFC: World MMA Rankings for the Start of May - Page 3
Demian Maia
The submission specialist holds his top 5 status, remaining in the hunt by beating Mario Miranda and Kendall Grove. He’ll face Mark Munoz in Vancouver.
Ronaldo Souza (“Jacare”)
Jacare successfully defended his title against middleweight mainstay Robbie Lawler. He continues to show development in all aspects of MMA with each fight. No opponent has been scheduled for his next title defence yet.
Jorge Santiago
The Sengoku champion won a wildly entertaining battle against Kazuo Misaki in his 2nd title defence. Now he’s signed with the UFC, and will face Brian Stann at the end of the month.
Michael Bisping (“The Count”)
Bisping enters the top 10 with a win over Yoshihiro Akiyama. He was then able to take out Jorge Rivera, and remains one of the top draws internationally.
Robbie Lawler (“Ruthless”)
Lawler couldn’t win the title against Jacare, but came pretty close at times. He’s currently out with a foot injury.
Brian Stann (“The All American”)
Stann entered the top 10 with a strong win over Chris Leben. His next challenge is the last Sengoku champion Jorge Santiago.
Welterweight (170 pound limit)
Georges St. Pierre (“Rush”)
GSP walked away with a 6th title defence on April 30th, but his shutout streak came to an end. He’s still the welterweight champion, but looked much more fallible than ever before. Will he be able to stay on top of the division?
Jake Shields
Shields did better against GSP than anyone has. Moreover, Shields wasn’t even able to implement his gameplan, which was to take GSP down and work for a submission. For his performance against GSP, Shields deserves the #2 spot in the division.
Jon Fitch
Fitch may go down in history as the best fighter to never win a title. He’s 13-1 in the UFC and often listed on top 10 pound for pound rankings.
BJ Penn (“The Prodigy”)
Penn’s return to the welterweight division show him knock out Matt Hughes in a trilogy fight then take Jon Fitch to a draw.
Thiago Alves (“Pitbull”)
In a battle of the then #2 and #3 guys, Alves lost a decision to Jon Fitch. He got back on the winning track and seems to have solved his weight cutting issues in last December’s win over John Howard.
Josh Koscheck
Koscheck is still unable to resume training after getting beat up by GSP last December.
Martin Kampmann (“The Hitman”)
Kampmann gave Shields a tough battle in Shields’ UFC debut.
Nick Diaz
Diaz just keeps winning against whoever is put in front of him. Will he move to boxing? Will he get a superfight against GSP? No one knows what the bombastic Diaz will do next, but his fights sure are entertaining
