$43 Million Dollar Man Getting Outplayed
Earlier this year Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams signed a $43 million contract making him the highest paid running back at the time. However, since the 2011 NFL season has started Williams has played more like an overrated, overpaid player.
Rookie Quarterback Cam Newton has taken over goal line rushing duties and Williams has yet to score. Cam Newton has already amassed 133 rushing yards and 4 rushing touchdowns. Williams only has 10 yards more rushing than his quarterback.
To the surprise of many, Carolina’s passing game has far out shadowed its usually stellar rushing attack. With Carolina mostly playing from behind, their passing game has been called upon often.
Their rookie quarterback has accumulated a staggering 1386 yards through the air, third best in the NFL so far. With so many yards to go around in the passing game you would think that their million dollar running back would also play a big role in that as well.
If you thought that, you’d be wrong. Not only is DeAngelo being shown up by his first year quarterback, but is he not even the best performing running back on his own team. Jonathan Stewart, Carolina’s second running back, only has 1 less rushing yard than Williams but took several less attempts to get there. Stewart is also vastly outperforming Williams in the receiving game as well.
Stewart has 17 catches for 173 yards while Williams has 7 catches for 46 yards. In fantasy football, Jonathan Stewart can be recommended as a flex starter because of his dual threat as a rusher and receiver. As for DeAngelo Williams, I would keep him on the sidelines until he can remember how to get back to his game breaking form. It time for DeAngelo to stop counting his cash and start cashing in some big plays.
