NFC Championship: Minnesota Vikings v New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints pulled out a win over the Minnesota Vikings for the NFC Championship game, sending them to their first Super Bowl.

In what was a tight match up, with both teams tied up for most of the game, the final victory came down to overtime. A fortuitous coin toss gave the ball to the Saints who then turned in a 40-yard field goal for a final score of: Saints 31, Vikings 28.

There was very little domination by either team, and the typically high-scoring Saints offense was less of a factor as was its ability to take advantage of Minnesota's five turnovers. Vikings quarterback Brett Favre's age was showing by the end of the game, but Saints hometown favorites Drew Brees and Reggie Bush had their fair share of missteps. Perhaps it was a bit of karmic release which blew the winds of fate in New Orleans direction.

New Orleans, which is still recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, deserved some good fortune and residents poured into the streets last night to celebrate the win. In some ways, the town has recovered emotionally by rallying around their beloved Saints; it will be interesting to see if the team can ride this wave of joy all the way through to the Super Bowl.

They will be meeting up with AFC champions Indianapolis Colts, who defeated the New York Jets in an earlier game yesterday, 30-17.

The Saints will have to bring their A-game if they want to defeat the Peyton Manning-led Colts. This should be a great Super Bowl XLIV, which airs February 7, 6:25 pm, ET on CBS.
