Fencing World Championships to Start in Catania

937 fencers from 113 countries will compete across the 6 fencing disciplines at the 2011 Fencing World Championships from October 8th - 16th 2011. On the line for these athletes are not only world championship medals, but also precious qualifying points for the 2012 Olympic Games.

The International Fencing Federation (FIE) is reaching out to world fans of the sport by streaming live video of the fencing and wheelchair fencing events via YouTube and the FIE promotional site at fie.org.

In addition, fencers will be able to earn prize money for medal placement at these World Championships:

Individual events

Gold medal: $20,000 per athlete
Silver medal: $10,000 per athlete
Bronze medal: $5,000 per athlete

Team events

Gold medal $30,000 per team
Silver medal: $15,000 per team
Bronze medal: $10,000 per team
