Tracy Austin signing autographs; USTA Member Appreciation Day

Friday was Member Appreciation Day at the 2012 US Tennis Open. Members of the United States Tennis Association received a gift, snacks and drinks in the hospitality pavilion of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center's main building. Amidst the needed cool air conditioning of the hottest day of the Open, members had the opportunity to hang out, take pictures with friends and meet Tracy Austin who was present part of the day to sign autographs.

Outside, the conditions were less than ideal for players on Ashe and elsewhere on the grounds as men and women battled their section of Round 2 or Round 3 in 93 degree heat and breezy conditions. Because of the arduous match between Na Li (9) and Great Britain's Laura Robson which resulted in a tremendous upset and win for the fabulous Robson, the upcoming match between Juan Martin Del Potro and US favorite Ryan Harrison was delayed and the crowds swelled in the hope of seeing the tense competition between Li and Robson followed by Del Potro and Harrison who many hoped would beat the Argentinian. It was not to be; Harrison lost to Del Potro in four sets, unable to get his mojo up to the skill of Del Po.

As a result of the listed first three matches, the third promising John Isner against Jarkko Nieminen (Finland) Louis Armstrong had limited seating and eventually all fan traffic was diverted to a very long line where many gave up instead of waiting an hour or more to get into Louis Armstrong.

Eventually, the line was closed completely. However, there were matches throughout the grounds, some of them with Americans, though the lines were long everywhere and the wait time climbed as fans rushed to line up for matches whose status could be checked on iPhones or Androids.
