The crippling snow storm that shut down much of northern Arizona has left over two dozen hunters still out in the cold with sheriffs still searching for them a day later despite 20 inches of snow or more in some areas.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office told the AP that over 30 hunters had been reported missing at one point, but at least seven hunters have been made safe as of Wednesday evening.

Precautions for avoiding serious injury if caught in cold weather while hunting include making sure someone knows where you will be at what time so your absence will be noticed.  Also, carry a cell phone or other communication device.  Dress in layers to avoid soaking your only layer of protection and to control your body temperature more easily.

Finally, safety equipment for your situation (water, mountainous terrain, desert, etc.) is a must and should be checked before departing.  Check with local safety officials if you do not know what safety equipment makes sense for you.
