2011 was a common year according to the Gregorian calendar. It had exactly 365 days and was designated as the International Year of Forests and the International Year of Chemistry by the United Nations. 2011 was marked by a number of memorable socio-political events, as well as some new discoveries in science and technology and new achievements in the arts.

The Arab Spring was a wave of revolutionary protests that occurred in the Arab world and culminated during the spring of 2011. They resulted in the resignation and ousting of several political leaders, including the Yemeni prime minister, the Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, as well as the Libyan leader Muhammad Gadaffi. Other Arab leaders have either agreed to resign or not seek re-election.

In 2011, Dan Shechtman was awarded the Nobel prize in chemistry for his discovery of quasicrystals, Saul Perlmutter, Adam G. Riess, and Brian P. Schmidt received the Nobel prize in physics for their study of the accelerating expansion of the universe, while Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer was awarded the Nobel prize in Literature.
