Do ADHD stimulant drugs such as Ritalin cause heart attacks? Yes, they can--in a small number of children. Children who have a pre-existing heart condition. Since 1999 thirty kids have died from sudden death attributed to stimulant drugs. And more have suffered heart-related problems.

Boy, it didn't take long for UVa Hospital to hop on the EKG bandwagon for kids with Attention Deficit, Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) after the AHA released their recommendations for EKG screening in kids on stimulant medications based on retrospective literature review and gut feelings. Sheesh.

ADHD drugs can lead to cardiac arrest April 25, 2008 If you have a child on ADHD drugs, or one who is about to be put on ADHD drugs, you should read this. A review by The Food and Drug Administration of its databases found reports of 19 sudden deaths in children treated with ADHD drugs and 26 reports of other problems including strokes and fast heart rates between 1999 and 2003.

Children should be screened for heart problems with an electrocardiogram before taking drugs such as Ritalin to treat hyperactivity and attention-defecit disorder according to the American Heart Association.  Children already on the drugs should also be tested.
