The hottest segments of the market over the last quarter have been commodity related names, specially coal stocks, steel stocks and agricultural names. Stocks like US Steel (X) had gone from under $100 just earlier this year to over $190 - until this week when all these hot stocks have turned over.

"Supply is struggling to meet demand." At first, I had a flashback to a peak oil argument from the weekend. How could you blame me? Every time I hear an "expert" talk about how the world is almost out of oil because of the peak oil theory, it's hard not to throw something at the television.

Yesterday, we looked at how the day’s top portfolios can provide a snapshot of what sectors are hot on a given day. Looking at the longer term lists, we can see what sectors have been hottest over a longer period. Right now the answer is pretty simple: coal (but steel and alternative energy aren’t so bad either).

Not Many Long Candidates, Coal Stocks Going Parabolic First of all, I am trying a new setup with the pictures of the charts I put on the blog. 1. Lehmen brothers to raise US$3-4 billion. Needs to deleverage. Markets guessing they will report a bad quarter on June 16. Stock price took quite a hit after rising last week. 2. China's Yanzhou raises 2008 coal export price. Likely buffering for their winter ahead. Could bode well for ANR, FDG. 3.

Possible Head and Shoulders Top on Indexes, Oil Stocks Running Again Here are the charts of the indexes. These don't look very bullish, even with volume being lower today and the market finishing off its lows. These are the numbers that need to hold: 2475 and then 2455 on the Nasdaq, and 1378 on the S&P 500.

What can I say - this is simply an epic move. As I keep saying this group reminded me of fertilizer last summer/fall - totally underestimated. I am simply amazed by the strength and voraciousness of this move, even as a super bull on the group.
