Roasting in Affluence

Most days I curse my swimming pool. It’s a pain… something is always breaking… it constantly needs chemicals and cleaning. Opening it is a hassle and closing it is a hassle. But on days like today - when it’s 94F and wicked humid - my little private pool is a wonderful reminder that I live in super-rich-America-land.

The Post writes today about accelerated math education curricula in local public schools. Though algebra is typically considered to be a ninth-grade math subject, many schools particularly in affluent suburbs are teaching the subject to their students in seventh grade.

And I’d like to say that nothing could be further from the truth. But I’d be lying.

Yesterday was Whit Monday. Or at least it used to be. The Day of the Holy Spirit, the day after Whitsun, now best known to some of us because it reminds us of a poem by Philip Larkin. It’s the spring holiday, a big day in the Retail Park calendar. I’m not sure that many people choose to marry at this time of the year now.

From May 17-19, I was with 275 young people at Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island. We enjoyed beautiful weather, good fellowship and the young people had a lot of fun. They had asked me to give two speeches and to lead in two worship services (convened under the authority of my home church, with office-bearers present).
