Dumb, possibly superficial question… In reading this post on Dominique Fabre’s The Waitress Was New, something clicked in my head while looking at the cover art. Is that a painting by Amedeo Modigliani? The only reason why i’m dimly aware of him is because in reading the Wikipedia entry for Blaise Cendrars, the image for Cendrars is a portrait of him by Modigliani.

9 x 12" oil on masonite sold I grew up with torn-out pages of Modigliani's works pinned on the walls of my mother's studio - she was a big fan. You see the influence in her oil paintings. One of my all-time favorite stories is a love story between Russian poet Anna Akhmatova and Italian-born painter Amedeo Modigliani.

Reclining Nude by Modigliani was at The Met. I like most all of Modigliani's work, but the colors in this painting pop unbelievably in person. Modigliani was an interesting character. He died in Paris of tubercular meningitis— exacerbated by poverty, overworking, and an excessive use of alcohol and narcotics — at the age of 35.
