American Airlines
American Airlines began life in 1930 as American Airways, a combination of dozens of small airlines stationed across the United States under one broad name. Since then, American Airlines has endured a lengthy, mostly successful history since its formation nearly a century ago.
In 1982, American Airlines underwent an approved reorganization, officially becoming a part of the AMR Corporation. In 1995, American Airlines announced its online presence, AA.com, and by 1996, allowed travelers to book flights directly through its site. In 2001, American Airlines merged with TWA, helping both entities out as they immediately struggled with the financial ramifications of 9/11.
American Airlines is currently based out of Fort Worth, Texas and operates hubs out of Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Miami, Puerto Rico, and St. Louis. According to a fact sheet published in 2008 on AA.com, American Airlines "and its regional airline affiliates, American Eagle and the AmericanConnection airlines, serve 250 cities in over 40 countries with about 4,000 daily flights."
