American flag

Tag details

Also referred to as or “the stars and stripes” or “old glory,” the American flag is the flag of the United States of America. It is considered by some to be a symbol of freedom and democracy, and by others a symbol of oppression and imperialism.

The American flag features 50 white stars on a blue field that represent the 50 U.S. states, and 13 alternating red and white stripes that represent the 13 original colonies. It is often depicted in other forms, including flag pins, which are politically popular.

There are many rules of flag etiquette, though U.S. law on the subject is minimal. Attempts to strengthen U.S. law to prevent burning the flag as an act of protest are controversial, and have so far failed.
